Slash has RUINED MY BRAIN FOREVER.

Ahahaha, seriously you guys, it's not even funny.

...Okay, so it's a little funny, actually.

Anyway, so in history we're learning about Ancient Near East civilizations, and today the professor was telling us the story of the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is basically about this badass king in Mesopotamia.  He's kind of a bitch though, so the people get pissed off at him and pray to the gods to take him down a notch or two.  The gods are like, "hey, so, this king is kind of a bitch" so they send this wild man named Enkidu to run around with the animals and mess up all the hunting.  As smiting goes it's kind of weird and lame, but whatever.  Anyway, the king is not really suited to a vegetarian lifestyle so he sends a prostitute out to have sex with Enkidu for a week (!), after which Enkidu becomes civilized and "wise", and loses his ability to chillax with the animals.  (No, really.  I couldn't make this stuff up.)  Then Enkidu goes and fights Gilgamesh, after which, of course, they become best friends.

The two of them journey around fighting a ton of monsters and stuff, until Gilgamesh gets proposed to by the goddess Ishtar.  Here's a paraphrased snapshot of what went on in the classroom during this part of the story:

PROFESSOR: Then Gilgamesh was proposed to by Ishtar, who was basically the Mesopotamian Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility, and he turned her down -
MY BRAIN: because he was having hot man sex with Enkidu.
PROFESSOR: because, he said, she brought misfortune to any man who was associated with her.  Ishtar was so offended that she decided to kill Enkidu.  Gilgamesh was heartbroken.
MY BRAIN: ...QED.  Hot man sex.

I had to stop myself from cracking up during class, because then people tend to ask what you're laughing about.  And that would have been awkward.  XD

That's pretty epic.

I have a similar problem. It's getting to the point where I called myself out for using "/" in such a way that it looked like I was shipping emoticons. So yeah.

[identity profile] nianeyna.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, do tell. >D *rapt expression*

[identity profile] floydsir.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I sent a facebook message with two smileys and a frowny, I think. Then I sent a message saying, "Wow, that was a lot of smileys/frownys" or something. And then I realized that it looked like I was shipping emoticons. So yes. :D/D:

You know, after reading about the ancient cultures, I'm pretty sure that there is slash in almost all of the literature/mythology. Plus, heroes/sidekicks are eternally shippable, no matter the source material.:D Which is to say, fandom has rotten my brain forever, too.XD (Though if I remember correctly, Gilgamesh was pretty racy on its own.)

[identity profile] nianeyna.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can never quite parse how societies can be so down on homosexuality and yet still be so, so, flamingly gay. It boggles the mind, it does. Sadly though I have not actually read Gilgamesh, just heard my teacher's lolarious summary in class this morning. (well. Lolarious to me, anyway. XD)

Fandom: turning brains to mush since 3000 BCE.

Everything can be slashed, everything is slash.

It's best to go with the flow.

But I totally agree with you, and I would have been laughing too.

[identity profile] nianeyna.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Too true. Seriously, name a story and I could probably think of some way to slash it. It doesn't even have to be a story. I mean, you can slash pen/pencil (and I actually have, ahahaha oh god). TEH GHEY, IT'S TAKING OVER THE WORLD. XD

[identity profile] dreamwaffles.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty much incapable of keeping a straight (hah) face in my Humanities class. We had this lecture in the fall which was...totally about the gay love between Achilleus and Patroklos. I am not kidding.

Hee. XD

[identity profile] nianeyna.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Was the phrase "gay love" actually used? I ask only out of intellectual curiosity, you understand. *pushes up glasses with great studiousness*

Also, ha ha, you are so punny. (funny lookin!) :P

[identity profile] dreamwaffles.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...yes.

The lecture was called "Love is a Battlefield".

Well there's the fact that they're fighting at that brides door and make the house shake then figure out they can't kill one another so they're like "hey he's my equal" and then *they kiss* So really, hot mansex, not so far a stretch. Seriously Gilgamesh=first gay epic (also first written story recorded thus far in history so beat that!) Also, YAY GILGAMESH normally most people think I'm weird for making references to it since I love it's epic/crazy self so much. The only difference was in our class the teacher kind of pointed out that Gilgamesh and Enkidu sort of had it going on (really one was created to stop the other from terrorizing is lands/the women in his lands before the wedding days)...And then they have epic journeys together with boars and forests and meet Utnapishtim (after *Sad* spoilers) and hear about Noah and the Tree of Life and it's all dandy and the origination of *everything*
...or something like that ^.~

So, I really need to actually read this thing. Can you suggest a good edition, perchance? :D :D :D All I have to go on is my prof's tiny little summary, so, uh, yeah. I am intrigued! This definitely has the potential to become a new ship for me, which is sad because I somehow don't think there's much of a fandom for it. XD

No, not a lot of fandom for it sadly, but lots of scholars in fandom know it. ^^ I have a copy back in Seattle, an edition I rather like too but as I'm unable to remember the actual editors name etc that's useless. I could tell you in the summer...or even loan it to you! Also, yes you should totally read and ship and be academically fannish!

[identity profile] yaycoffee.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Awesome!

[identity profile] nianeyna.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my brain has a tendency to wander in interesting ways during class time. Earlier this year I appear to have written "Oh noes! Dean Winchester salted and burned the FTC!" [FTC = fundamental theorem of calculus] in my calculus notes. Um. Yes. Obviously, no part of my life is safe from fandom. Nothing is sacred! *hides*

[identity profile] miarr.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD HOW EPIC IS THIS. ♥ I love you, Nia's brain. We just finished learning about Mesopotamia in Art History class! Those guys are truly full of lulz. Also, Gilgamesh/Enkidu is the next (well, earlier, really) Achilles/Patroclus, y/y?

Sigh. Now I really sort of want to request them for the next Yuletide. *g*

[identity profile] brainmissing.livejournal.com 2009-04-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This is all kinds of hilarious, and I wish I had not caught myself doing the exact same thing in US History. Only it was a pre-WWI soap opera. Involving countries.... O.o

MY BRAIN: ...QED.  Hot man sex.
You make my life brighter.

[identity profile] nianeyna.livejournal.com 2009-04-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
A soap opera with countries...? Are we talking anthropomorphism here? I am intrigued!

Also, I'm glad I could brighten your day. :)
